Great Movies of Summer: Le Mepris [1963]

The steep angle of the sun against the walls of the Cinecitta movie studio buildings, in Rome. its washed but still saturated earth colors, and then the stark, hot surfaces and raked shadows of the wonderful Casa Malaparte on the island of Capri, and the refreshing cool of the Mediterranean behind. The naked Bridget Bardot swimming and lounging doesn't exactly hurt. The churning strings of Samuel Barber's Adagio accentuate how moving slowly, languidly, is sometimes necessary under the pressing heat.
